Just conducted my first training course on covert video systems & video evidence handling for a special law enforcement unit in South Africa. In order to defend video evidence it is critical to:
- Prove the recording equipment was in proper working order and have a log of any servicing.
- Make sure the system time/date was correct when the recording took place and that the overlay is in place.
- Be able to demonstrate that the operators of the equipment where competent and appropriately trained.
- Be able to prove the chain of evidence. In terms of covert systems this would include an evidence logbook, use of brand new memory cards, use of evidence bags, the appropriate procedures in place and the creation of working copies of the footage while retaining the master
Video Evidence @ at its best !!
